Own your audience

Renting attention is how you start. Owning the relationship is how you survive. On lists, first-party data and the platforms' rising rent.

Every rented channel has a landlord, and every landlord raises rent. CPMs climb, organic reach decays, algorithms change on a Tuesday. The only audience that can't be repriced is the one that gave you permission directly.

First-party data is the asset class of the decade: the email list, the SMS opt-in, the purchase history, the preference center. Not because cookies died — because leverage shifted. Signal you own feeds every auction you rent.

Our rule: platforms for reach, ownership for relationship. Use paid to acquire enthusiastically — then convert attention into permission at every touch. A quiz, a genuinely useful email, a reason to come back that isn't a discount.

The metric to watch is the ratio: what share of this month's revenue could you re-create without buying it again? Companies with a good answer negotiate with platforms from strength. Companies without one are sharecropping.
